Riya was named Manalapan High School's Class of 2024 Valedictorian. She had maintained the highest GPA in her class of 450 students throughout her four years in high school. She had the chance to give a speech to the graduating class. She took the time to thank those who helped her along the way and give advice to the Class of 2024 as they embark on separate paths.
In December 2023, Riya auditioned and was selected to play the role of Belle in Manalapan High School's production of "Beauty and the Beast". Riya performed in early March, and won the award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Female Identified Role from the Count Basie Center of the Arts. This was the first time in several years that Manalapan High School had won this award. Riya was among all high school female leads in Monmouth County (more than 150 students).
Riya was the chosen nominee out of 450 students in her high school's junior class for the Governor's School of Engineering and Technology (GSET). Riya was one of 72 scholars selected out of all high school nominees in New Jersey for a full scholarship to take courses at Rutgers University and pursue novel research accepted to MIT's Undergraduate Research Technology Conference & published in IEEE. She took courses in Robotics, Physics, Game Design, and Digital Logic Design. She also researched real-time audio encryption using chaos maps, Wavelet Transforms, and Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange.
Riya sang the US National Anthem at the Ronald Reagan Center in Washington D.C. in front of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and the Indian Diaspora. After her performance, she received blessings from him, and commended her on her "beautiful voice" (a direct quote from him).
Riya worked on research in cybersecurity, where she developed a defense mechanism that guarantees protection for common users and small-businesses against four of the most prevalent cyber-attacks. She wrote a paper detailing her research and presented her work at the New Jersey Southern Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NJSJSHS). She won first place overall and in her Computer Science category, which admitted her into the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NJSHS), where she was a national finalist. She was also awarded a national Honorable mention by the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) for her research and efforts to promote STEM education in women. This research was also accepted to MIT's Undergraduate Research Technology Conference in October 2023. Riya won the Youth Icon Award at the Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal (BMM) 2022 Convention in Atlantic City. She was recognized for her achievements in pageantry, performing arts, extracurriculars, and academics. She was selected out of all Marathi teens in the US and Canada. Riya was presented with this coveted award at BMM's opening ceremony in front of a crowd of approximately 5,000 people, where she was selected from many talented singers to sing the Canadian and Indian national anthems. She additionally performed several songs with her guru, Hemant Kulkarni, in an extensive performance that included well-known Marathi and Hindustani Classical songs.
Riya recently did an interview with Radio Zindagi. Her interview was broadcast on TV, Facebook Live, and was streamed on the radio. In the interview, she had the opportunity to discuss her upbringing with music and she also sang many of her favorite songs. The interview was meant to be an "Artist Spotlight" segment, in which the host discussed Riya's accomplishments and future plans as a singer.
During her summer internship with Commvault Systems, Riya was one of the youngest interns in the group. She was able to learn from her mentors and had a first-hand experience of the corporate lifestyle. In her six weeks at Commvault, she learned and researched ransomware. She applied her knowledge in C++ towards developing code that effectively created and deleted honeypot files in order to prevent attacks. Riya’s code is now part of Commvault’s product and is used for the security checks of thousands of Commvault’s customer companies.
